New name for UK Patent Office |

The UK Patent Office has changed its name to the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO), and has a new logo and web site address: www.ipo.gov.uk.
Ron Marchant, Chief Executive of the UK Intellectual Property Office, welcomed the change of name, saying;
"I believe that the new name 'UK Intellectual Property Office' (UK-IPO) truly reflects the wide range of intellectual property services offered and dispels confusion and uncertainty for our customers."

The end of UK Trade Mark examination as we know it |

The examination process that UK trade mark applications must go through has just become a lot simpler, bringing the UK Registry into line with the European Community Trade Marks Office (OHIM).
The UK Trade Marks Registry will no longer refuse to advertise trade mark applications in situations where the mark applied for conflicts with an earlier trade mark. This is a major change in the practice and role of the UK Registry.

UK Trade Marks examination process changes |

The examination procedures that the UK Intellectual Property Office (UK-IPO) uses to assess trade mark applications will undergo a major change next month.
From 1st October 2007 the UK-IPO will no longer refuse registration for a new trade mark application on the grounds that it is confusingly similar to an earlier registration or application.

A 12 month pilot scheme was launched on 2nd July 2007 with the aim of speeding up processing patent applications in the UK and Japan.
