Dr. Anna Molony will present a comprehensive seminar on the potential value of patent searching to a companys product development strategy. The seminar is part of this years' Imaging, Photonics & Optical Technology expo, at the NEC on the 15th and 16th February.
For those who would like to know what new products competitors are developing, identify potential gaps in technology, or find a solution to a technical problem, this is guaranteed to be illuminating.
Most R&D companies know that they should protect their innovations with patents, but may forget that competitors are doing exactly the same. A competitors patent portfolio is therefore a valuable source of information and can be used to help target costly research efforts.
There are millions of published patents and patent applications in the worldwide patent archive, and details of most of them are available to search on patent databases. So, using an appropriate search strategy, it is possible to build a patent map of a technical field, track competitors research and development, and simply have a look at someone elses solution to a technical problem that a company is experiencing.
Dr. Molony has considerable industry and patent knowledge and will explore the different types of patent searches and when and how to use them, with specific reference to examples in industry. She is scheduled to speak at 12:00 on 15 February 2006, as part of the Photonics Cluster's "Making light work in industry" seminar programme.
