Helga Chapman

Helga Chapman

Helga founded Chapman Molony following many years experience as a Patent Attorney in private practice and as IP Counsel at Rolls-Royce Aerospace. Helga’s speciality is in providing business focused IP services including due diligence, competitor analysis and IP infringement advice. Helga’s technical expertise in prosecuting and advising on patents spans a broad range of technologies, including aerospace, construction materials, and mechanical and general engineering. Her clients cover a wide spectrum and include one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction materials. She is also experienced at representing clients in hearings at the European Patent Office.

Helga is one of our trade marks specialists and advises on all aspects of trade mark rights. She is also experienced in carrying out IP due diligence for investors and IP strategy development.

She graduated from Leeds University with a Mechanical Engineering Degree and entered the profession in 1991.

Dr Anna Molony

Anna joined Helga to form Chapman Molony from a position as IP Counsel in an IP-rich early stage photonics company. She also has many years experience as a Patent Attorney in private practice, advising a diverse range clients including one of the world’s leading telecommunications systems providers and a major UK consumer products company. Anna has carried out patent prosecution and advisory work in a wide range of technologies. She has particular experience in photonics, optics, and telecommunications, but also advises clients in the fields of mechanical engineering, general engineering and electrical and electronic based devices.

Anna is one of our trade marks specialists and advises on all aspects of trade mark rights. She also carries out IP due diligence for mergers and acquisitions and is experienced in setting up IP management processes in early stage companies.

She holds a BSc in Physics from Birmingham University, an MSc in Optoelectronic and laser devices from St Andrews University, and a PhD in Photonics from Aston University. Her PhD research related to optical fibre gratings and their applications. Anna entered the profession in 1996.

Huw Evans

Huw Evans

Director

Huw has substantial engineering expertise gained as an electronic design engineer at Rediffusion Radio Systems and STC before he joined the patent profession. He also has many years experience as a Patent Attorney in private practice, advising clients ranging from start-ups to SMEs, Universities and multinationals. Huw joined Chapman Molony from a position as a Partner in a large, London based firm of patent and trade mark attorneys. His experience covers a diverse range of technologies. He specialises in prosecuting and advising on patents relating to electrical and electronic based technologies, wireless communications; semi-conductor devices; computer software, and optical components.

Huw is one of our trade marks and industrial designs specialists, and has extensive experience in representing clients at trade marks hearings. He also has particular expertise in IP portfolio management and has managed the Hoover patent and trade mark portfolio.

He attained a Bachelors degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nottingham Trent University. Huw entered the profession in 1991.

In addition to his professional work, Huw mentors PhD students at Cardiff University and is responsible for the firm’s IT systems, which include specialist case management software and an intranet connecting our offices.

Kate Rawlins

Kate Rawlins

Kate joined Chapman Molony following four years working as a Patent Engineer and then IP Counsel at the BOC Group. She also has significant experience as a Patent Attorney in private practice and several years engineering experience gained at Westland Helicopters and WS Atkins before she joined the patent profession. Kate’s technical expertise includes aeronautical engineering, fluid dynamics, and mechanical engineering. She has particular experience in patents relating to wind turbines, vacuum pump technology, radar, flammability and gas explosion containment analysis, and medical devices. Her clients include a large wind power company and a global aerospace and defence corporation.

Kate holds both an Aeronautical Engineering Degree and an MSc in Computational Fluid Dynamics and Computational Structural Mechanics from Imperial College, London. She entered the profession in 2000.

In addition to her client work, Kate runs the firm’s Law Practice Committee and arranges regular LawComm meetings to ensure that we are kept up to date with IP law and practice.

Dr Catherine Bonner

Dr Catherine Bonner

Catherine joined Chapman Molony following 3 years working as a Patent Attorney in the Intellectual Property division of Dyson Technology. She also has extensive experience as a Patent Attorney in private practice, advising a broad range of clients including early stage companies, SMEs and multinational corporations.

Her experience includes filing and prosecuting patent and design applications across a wide range of mechanical engineering and physics-based subject matter, as well as providing advice on invention harvesting, product clearance and commercial management of IP rights. She specialises in medical technologies, low pressure systems, telecommunications, photonics, displays, and TV broadcast. Catherine is one of our industrial designs specialists and advises on all aspects of these rights.

Catherine graduated from St Andrews University with a Physics degree and attained a PhD at the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton. Her PhD research related to planar waveguide devices. She entered the profession in 1999.

Catherine tutors within the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys tutorial programme and is one of the authors of the CIPA training manual for trainee Patent Attorneys.

Hedley Austin

Hedley Austin

Hedley is a very experienced Patent Attorney, having been a Partner in a large, London based firm of patent attorneys for many years prior to joining Chapman Molony as a consultant. He worked at Derwent Publications before entering the patent profession. His clients range from individuals and start-up companies, to SMEs and multinational corporations. 

His technical expertise covers chemistry, materials science, biotechnology, and medical inventions. He has particular expertise in prosecuting and advising on patents relating to pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and medical applications. Hedley has extensive experience in representing clients at European Patent Office hearings. He is one of our trade marks specialists and advises on all aspects of trade mark rights. Hedley also advises on IP due diligence, portfolio management, and licensing.

Hedley holds a Chemistry degree from Nottingham University and qualified as a Patent Attorney in 1979.

Dr Elliott Davies

Elliott joined Chapman Molony from a large UK firm of patent and trade mark attorneys. He has significant experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications in a wide range of mechanical and physics related technologies. He has particular expertise in photonics, optical devices, semiconductors, electrical and electronic technologies, and computer software. Elliott is one of our industrial design specialists and advises on all aspects of these IP rights.

Elliott holds a Masters degree in Physics and a PhD in Photonics, both from Bath University. Upon graduating he was awarded the British Aerospace prize for outstanding work. His PhD research related to the acoustic and optical properties of photonic crystal optical fibre. Elliott entered the patent profession in 2003 and is a part-qualified UK Patent Attorney.

Vicky Dalton

Vicky Dalton

Practice Manager

Core expertise: patent, trade mark and design renewals

Vicky joined Chapman Molony from a position as the accounts manager at a children’s TV programme production company. Prior to that she was an air traffic control officer in the Royal Air Force.

Vicky manages the day-to-day running of the firm, including our accounts department and our patent, design, and trade mark renewals service. She has attained the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys Certificate in Patent Administration.
